Set in the midst of the South of Market arts district, the Westin San Francisco Market Street, formerly the Argent Hotel, is a modern 36-story hotel that avoids the generic look of many big hotels. One-of-a-kind art fills nearly every corner, from a gold-leaf dome and original murals in Ducca's Restaurant and Lounge, to a David Hockney lithograph by the elevator; a brochure of the art collection is available for self-guided tours. In the wood-paneled lounge, international corporate execs and conventioneers relax and watch big-screen CNN on sofas in front of the fire of this San Francisco hotel.

Active guests start their days with a morning run through the city, led by a knowledgeable jogging guide. Late-risers head for the large, well-equipped fitness center. In the evenings, live jazz sets the tone for unwinding in the lounge and bar, or out in the private garden courtyard.

Art lovers take note: The renowned Museum of Modern Art and adjacent Yerba Buena Center for the Arts are both 1 block from the Westin Market Street. Several smaller galleries are tucked into side streets in the area, including the wonderful California Historical Society and the Cartoon Art Museum.
